"Becoming Indian": Latin America's Indigenous Peoples

Students enrolled in "Becoming Indian" will analyze monographs, testimonies, and fiction to explore the construction of indigenous identities and the history of indigenous communities in Mexico, Central America, and the Andean highlands. The course will emphasize 19th- and 20th-century indigenista movements, social issues, and contemporary political revolutions but will also cover the colonial period.

Becker, SETTING THE VIRGIN ON FIRE Cope, THE LIMITS OF RACIAL DOMINATION Mariategui, SEVEN REALITIES Vargas Llosa, CAPTAIN PANTOJA AND THE SPECIAL SERVICE Various primary source materials, on reserve in Olin and, where possible, in a course packet at Atticus. Additional texts will be added, depending on availability.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Midterm exam, final paper or exam, two writing exercises, two (4-6 page) papers.
