East European Politics

This course looks at one of the most profound and debated political transformations of the twentieth century: The transition from communism in Eastern Europe. We will compare the experiences of East Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia) and the Balkans (Romania, Bulgaria, and the former Yugoslavia) to examine the legacies of communism and the struggles of these countries to construct stable democratic and capitalist systems. Using lessons from the East European transitions, we will speculate at the end of the course on the future of the remaining communist countries in the world, including China.
