Comparative politics is the study of the political process within different countries around the globe. This course will introduce students to the key concepts and approaches in the field. It is assumed that students
will
already have taken the general introductory course, GOVT 157. This course focuses on movements and institutions in the developed and developing world, while the parallel course GOVT 271 The Political Economy of
Development
looks at social and economic issues in the developing world.
Topics to be covered will include: dilemmas of collective action; social movement theory; why revolutions occur; bureaucratic behavior; the evolution of
institutions;
choices in constitutional design; federalism; party systems; electoral behavior. Cases will be drawn from all regions of the world, including the US.
