Children's Literature in Germany
GERM 316 SP
A careful examination of various older and modern texts will enable us to find answers to such questions as: Who were and are the authors, readers, publishers, and supporters of books for children? What are their
educational
goals and aesthetic criteria? What topics are (or are not) treated? What is the significance in these works of reality and fantasy?
MAJOR READINGS
The final reading list depends on the latest developments in this genre, i.e., most recent publications and award-winning books. The following authors will probably be included: Bayer, Busch, Ende, Grimm, Haertling,
Hoffmann, Janosch, Kordon, Lindgren,
Noestlinger, Pausewang, Preussler, Welsh, Woelfel.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Two oral reports, four shorter papers, one final project
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
A large amount of material will be treated. Participants should be prepared to read at least one book per session.
