After the Fall: German Literature and Culture Since 1989

An overview of German literary and cultural production since the fall of the Berlin Wall, this course will examine a wide variety of texts (fiction and non-fiction, film and the arts). Included among the major issues addressed in the seminar: the tension between East and West and between the older generation and the new; recent trends developed by contemporary writers, artists and filmmakers; the growing concern over a multicultural Germany and the role of minorities; globalization, Americanization and the new Berlin republic.

Several short essays, one presentation, active participation.
