Giants of German Prose
GERM 260 SP
In this course significant novels and novellas by Theodor Fontane, Thomas Mann, Franz Kafka, Hermann Hesse, Max Frisch, Heinrich Boell, Peter Handke, and Guenter Grass will be carefully read and discussed. Particular
attention
will be paid to the portrayal of social and political issues, to narrative strategies, and to continuities and discontinuities in the cultures of the German-speaking regions.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Occasional quizzes. Weekly "reading journal" entries; oral reports; and one final project, which may be creative in nature.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
For credit toward the German major, some of the readings, as well as the final project, may be done in German. Class discussion will be conducted in English.
