Workshop in Literary Translation
FREN 302 SP

The aim of this course is to develop the art and craft of literary translation among those students who have both a good knowledge of French and an already exhibited stylistic sensitivity in English. A wide chronological range of works--short narrative, theater, and verse, both traditional and free--from a diverse body of authors will provide the material for semiweekly sessions devoted to mutual criticism and discussion. Each student will also work throughout the semester on an individual translation project of his or her choice. A number of relevant critical texts will be read.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students should consult with the instructor before registering, and should be prepared to present a brief writing sample in English, in any literary genre, preferably but not necessarily translated from the French. No single textbook will be used, but a variety of theoretical and technical articles, ancillary to the main-creative-work in the course, will be assigned.

While any student who has completed FREN 215 (with a minimum grade of B) or has placed out of FREN 125 through the placement test may sign up for this course, it is an advanced course intended for students who have already taken two courses in French beyond 215 or already studied abroad in a French-speaking country.
