The Mark of Zora: Rereading Hurston's Literary Legacy
ENGL 353 SP

Once out of print and out of favor, Zora Neale Hurston has become a canonical figure in American and African American literary studies. This course examines Hurston's literary production, playing particular attention to its varying receptions in her time and ours. In addition to reading critically most of her novels, short stories, plays, essays, and articles, we will consider, among other questions, how texts are produced by their interpretive communities? Just how did Hurston go from outcast to icon, and how does her work compare with that of her black female contemporaries, Jessie Fauset and Nella Larsen?
