The American Crime Story

A history of the American crime story, beginning in the antebellum era and concluding with the present day. We will consider the literary and political significance of the genre, placing texts in their historical contexts and discussing the ways they have commented on the dynamics of American society.

MAJOR READINGS

A wide array of crime novels and films. Major readings will include Brockden Drown, Poe, Green, Hammett, Chandler, Thompson, Spillane, Hies, Macdonald, Paretsky, Ellroy, Mosley.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Mid-term, final, several short papers, and a research essay-approximately 33 pp total.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Reading assignment for this course will be substantial.
