A survey of modern literary, critical and cultural theories. Emphasis on key concepts--such as language and textuality; identity, subjectivity and gender; power, knowledge, cultural institutions and the state; and key figures, such as Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Saussure, Barthes, Gramsci, Benjamin, Althusser, Foucault, Lacan, and Jameson.

Numerous short papers.
