Marxism and Criticism
ENGL 292 SP
In this course we will begin by reading Marx's Capital. We will then read critics and theorists working in the Marxist tradition of literary and cultural analysis, including Bakhtin, Baudrilland, Bordieu, Egleton,
Guillory, Gramsci, and others.
MAJOR READINGS
Marx, CAPITAL v. I and others to be announced.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly short papers; a 10-15 page final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is a seminar in which all will be expected to participate. The reading will be demanding. Admission by permission of the instructor: previous work with theories of representations and culture will be a plus, as
will a cogent explanation of your
interest in the course. Come to my office at the beginning of preregistration to pick up an application form. This course counts toward the department's Theory requirement. Unless preregistered students attend the
first class meeting or communicate
directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
