This course will introduce the student to literary texts from a variety of countries representing formerly colonized nations in what is sometimes also called the Third World, such as India, Nigeria, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Brazil. Among other issues, we will discuss whether, in fact, we are justified in discussing a literary genre called Third World or Postcolonial, what its attributes are, if we are so justified, and what happens to a text from the Third World when it is read within the First World.
