Contesting Marriage in Early Modern England

This course examines the struggle to define and regulate marriage and sexuality in Shakespeare and his contemporaries, focusing on the emergence of modern marriage and marriage and its doubles, broken nuptials and prostitution.

MAJOR READINGS

Selections from 16th-17th C conduct books and Sermons;
Shakespeare, Selected Comedies, OTHELLO;
Heyword, WOMAN KILLED WITH KINDNESS.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two papers.
