Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston were major figures in the Harlem Renaissance and beyond. Toni Morrison and John Wideman continue to produce major fiction in the modern era. We will examine these major African
American
writers and their work, paying particular attention to issues of gender, family, community, sexuality and the literary politics affecting African American writers.
