Readings in the Novel
ENGL 216 SP

In survey courses on the contemporary novel, the works of major authors are often sampled, but their longer, more demanding works are necessarily overlooked. This half course will enable students to read such novels and to develop a better sense of why and how they continue to matter.

MAJOR READINGS

This year, the novelist is Thomas Pynchon. Usually, in survey courses, his short work, THE CRYING OF LOT 49, is read. We will read the longer, later work, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Frequent short papers, one longer final paper.
