Academic Year 2004/2005

Storyfirst Online
ENGL 142 FA

This course may be repeated for credit.

Learn how short stories build from the idea you had into living, breathing fiction. Class meets online at StoryMoo in an electronic community created for the course. Discuss your fiction in a dynamic real-time workshop and regular one-on-one conferences with the instructor. In this user-friendly, text-based environment, anything is possible and nobody cares if you have a bad hair day, because you are what you type. Writing intensive.

MAJOR READINGS

You'll read my weekly essay on writing dialog, use of detail and other major aspects of fiction writing. In addition to reading and discussing others' work online, you'll be expected to read and post critiques to a class mailing list before the group discussion. Don't worry; you'll have plenty of technical support.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

You'll write between five and eight pages weekly, turned in on an absolute deadline schedule as real-time workshop discussions will center on your work. Prepare and post careful notes on each week's stories to *wes before the weekly group meeting.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
