Bharata Natyam II: Embracing the Traditional and the Modern
DANC 362 SP

This course will focus on gaining an understanding of the juxtaposition of the classicism of Bharata Natyam against its various manifestations in post modern culture. We will foster an understanding of the role, function, and imaging of Bharata Natyam dance in its traditional and contemporary contexts. The course assumes no prior knowledge of Bharata Natyam and assumes no prior facility and study of any movement language above its introductory level. We will focus mainly on studio participation, preparing students as performers and scholars.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Class participation combined with readings, discussions and videoviewings and short research paper. This course will be based on: 50% Attendance/Participation, 30% Class Journal/Short Essays, 20% Short Research.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students will perform in the Worlds of Dance Concert at end of semester. Instructor may accept additional students at the first class. Please add your name to the enrollment request.
