Dance Teaching Workshop: Theory and Practice

Required Sequence: DANC341 & DANC447

A theoretical and practical course in teaching movement to children and adults, this course will center on materials and methods of dance and movement education in their technical, creative, scholarly, and musical aspects and on development of the student-teacher's own values, interests and teaching style. Work will include readings and written assignments, observation and evaluation of other dance classes for approach and methodology, and weekly movement and music assignments on class preparation and presentation. Practice teaching in area schools will be required either concurrently with this course or during the following semester. Students with dance, theater, music, or education backgrounds and with an interest in teaching within a classroom, studio, or rehearsal context will find the materials of this course directly applicable.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Work will include readings, written assignments, notebooks, and discussion; observation and evaluation of differing methodological and stylistic approaches in other dance classes; weekly assignments in class preparation and active teaching of movement and music for dance.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Concurrent enrollment in a dance technique course. Concurrent or second semester enrollment in DANC447 for practice teaching in area schools. This is an ampersand course with DANC447.
