Spanish Flamenco Dance
DANC 270 SP

This course introduces the fundamentals of the flamenco dance form that emerged from the Gypsy and Andalusian cultures of southern Spain. The course work focuses on the development of flamenco technique through the integration of footwork patterns, arm movements, body attitude, turns, and coordinating dance rhythms and phrasing to musical accompaniment. Emphasis is placed on gaining an understanding of flamenco in its various cultural contexts.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Discussion groups, participation in the "Worlds of Dance Concert" at the end of semester. Short papers based on readings & video viewings.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Hard-soled shoes with heels. Women with full skirts. A basic competence in rhythmic dance is a requirement for this class. Acceptance to this class will be determined by audition. December audition date to be announced. Please see Dance Department bulletin board. The Course Supplement will give further information. Please bring flamenco or character dance shoes if you have them, but bare feet are acceptable for the audition.
