Dancing Times: The Transformation of Representation in Western Dance 1200's - 1900's

This course will examine the gradual development of dance from its social forms/functions into a fine art between the 13th and 20th centuries. Particular attention will be paid to the shifting assumptions about bodies and their representation in society. This course requires students to be able to perform and analyze dances from the Middle Ages through present and to understand the development of dance in the context of concurrent developments in the arts, political life, education, technology, and social customs.

Bi-weekly short papers, some quizzes, and a final research paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a lecture/studio class. Materials will be presented through lectures, readings, videos and through the learning of specific dances. Participants will learn dances representative of different time periods. No prior dance experience is required.
