Muscle and Nerve Development
BIOL 543 FA
We will examine the structure and function of muscle cells, the development of muscle cell identity, the development of motor neurons, and the interactions between nerve and muscle that lead to a functioning
neuromuscular
system. The course will focus primarily on vertebrate model systems such as chick, mouse, and fish. We will also examine human diseases, including muscular dystrophies and related neuromuscular disorders.
MAJOR READINGS
Review articles, book chapters and current literature.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One paper in format of grant proposal; one exam; reviews of three other students' grant proposals; one class presentation.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students electing this course should be prepared to read the assignments with diligence and to participate in class discussions. Three types of developmental biology research will be covered in this area: Cell Biology,
Molecular genetics, and
Neurobiology. Students will be expected to be proficient in all the areas covered, however each student will concentrate on one of those areas, depending on their interests and background. Prerequisites: BIOL205 and
BIOL206 and one 200 or 300 level cour
se in Cell Developmental biology, or Genetics, or Neurobiology, or permission of instructor.
