What can be gained by locating queer studies scholarship with specific reference to time and place? Historical, anthropological, and some literary scholarship is strongly invested in such specificity, and we will explore some of the conventional and unconventional uses made of those disciplines in queer studies. We will also consider what can be gained by approaching spatial and temporal location as a problem. Recent work in queer studies raises questions about how best to understand gender and sexuality in relation to economic globalization and transnational movement of capital, culture, and people. We will address these questions by studying the international human rights of gender and sexual minorities. As we read, we will attend not only to the substance of the arguments presented, but also to the conventions which legitimize those arguments. Published scholarship will provide models for students as they design their own research projects.
