Enlightenment and Decadence in Modern Chinese Literature and Film
ALIT 244 FA
An exploration of heterogeneous voices of Modern Chinese Literature and film in terms of the double concerto of enlightenment and decadence. Discussions of edifying depravity, repressed modernities, the birth and death
of new youth, sentimental and unsentimental educations, desolated aesthetics, revolution, gender, violence, and sub-culture fantasy.
MAJOR READINGS
Writings by Lu Xun, Mao Pun, Ye Shaojun, Lao She, Eileen Chang (Zhang Aiding), Ding Ling, Yang Mo, Feng Jicai, Mo Yan, Ah Cheng, Wang Shuo, Zhu Tianwen, etc.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One short mid-term paper (5-6 pages) and one long final paper (10-15 pages; weekly email postings.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Regular attendance and active participation in class discussion. One paragraph email posting 24 hours prior to each session.
