Introduction to African American Literature

This course offers an introduction to the cultural production of African Americans from the mid-18th century to the present, with an emphasis on poetry and fiction. We will consider issues of genre, literary tradition(s), and historical context, while gaining experience in reading and writing about literary texts.

THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE
Selected novels.

Weekly discussion questions, short essays, and mid-term and final exams.
