Academic Year 2003/2004
Feminist Theory
WMST 209 FA
What is theory? For that matter, what is feminism? How is theory useful to feminism? This course will address these questions by reading theorists of transnational feminisms, globalization, social movement,
representation
(both democratic and semiotic), subjectivity, and the phallocentric symbolic order. Throughout the semester we will analyze how gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and class - all powerful axes of social-symbolic
difference
- are both mutually constituted and also significantly autonomous, a contradiction that is the complex condition of feminist thought and practice.
