Between Fiction and Film in Modern Spanish America
SPAN 262 FA

Crosslistings:
LAST 262

Our aim in this course is to study key examples of modern Spanish American fiction (novels and short stories) that have been adapted to film, in relation to the film adaptations of these works. In our analysis we will highlight the thematic linkage between each work and its historical and/or cultural context. We will focus especially on the points of contact between the fiction and film as literary and artistic genres, attempting to determine the ways in which narrative strategies are shared and how new ones are developed when stories are translated from one medium into another. Ultimately we will try to surmise the possible ideological or philosophical underpinnings of these strategies.
