Sociology and Social Theory

Through close reading, discussion and active interpretation, the course will critically examine the basic writings of classical and contemporary social theorists who have influenced the practice of sociology.

Max Weber, THE PROTESTANT ETHIC AND THE SPIRIT OF CAPITALISM
Emile Durkheim, SUICIDE
And selections from Charles Lemert, ed., SOCIAL THEORY-including Du Bois, Cooper, James,
Wallerstein, Merton, Cesaire, Foucault,
Habermas, Butler, Patricia Hill Collins, among others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Short papers, group projects, final essay, full participation.

Students must have had SOC 151 to enroll in this course. This course is open to majors only.
