Majors Colloquium in Religious Studies
RELI 398 SP

The Majors Colloquium is designed to teach us how to reflect critically upon the theories, methods, and discourses that constitute the academic study of religion. We will be concerned, chiefly, with current studies in history, and in the history of religions; philology and the interpretation of texts, including classics and the bible; philosophy of religion and theology; anthropology, cultural studies, and feminist theory. Our task is to understand and assess how scholars of religion make critical judgments. An so, since the building blocks of argumentation remain constant--definitions, classifications, data, and explanations--we will seek to identify and evaluate each scholar's principles of selection, means of description, stipulation of evidence, use of comparative categories, and methods and models of argumentation.

MAJOR READINGS

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Frequent short papers and a final essay, intensively literate participation in class discussion.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a required course for religion majors, is LIMITED TO THEM, and is to be taken in one's junior year. This course fulfills a "Critical Disciplines" requirement for the department major.
