Religion and Nation in India and Pakistan

In 1947, India and Pakistan emerged as new nations born from the inherent antagonism between Hinduism and Islam. Or so it seemed. Before Independence and after, South Asia has been a debating ground regarding the notion of nationalism, the role of British imperialism, and the natures of Hinduism and Islam.

This class will explore the changes in the interrelationships between religion, imperialism, and nationalism in South Asia both before and during the independence struggle of India and Pakistan and in the most recent debates regarding the future of each nation. Materials include primary and secondary sources both in print and on-line.
