Spinoza's ETHICS
PHIL 311 SP

This course is devoted to close reading of one of the philosophical masterpieces of the Western tradition. The ETHICS is of genuine contemporary interest, with its metaphysics that combine materialism with theism, its philosophical psychology that anticipates Freud, and its attempt to reconcile human freedom with a belief in scientific explanation. This is a difficult, vast, profound work that requires and will repay close study.

Weekly short paper and a substantial final paper.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is an advanced undergraduate seminar. To be admitted, students must have sufficient philosophical training to participate in a class at this level. This is a seminar, not a class. Students should be prepared to participate equally with the professor, to make introductory presentations and to organize the material on their own.
