Ethics and Violence
PHIL 284 SP

Crosslistings:
WMST 283
RELI 389

This seminar investigates relations among religion, gender, and violence. Through reading and discussion the students will have the opportunity to interrogate each of the terms of analysis while we explore background and context for thinking about questions such as: Why are religious movements so often a force for violence as well as peace? How are gender relations implicated in religious violence? How have women advocated and participated in religious violence? How have women resisted such violence? Recognizing that no single course could cover all areas of the world or all religions, (this version of) the course focuses (with a few exceptions) on Islam and Christianity. The readings have been chosen to give the students a sense of historical change, cultural variation, and differences in geo-political location within each tradition, as well as the chance to investigate relations between Christianity and Islam at given historical moments.
