The Self
PHIL 220 SP

Socrates said, "know thyself". But what is self-knowledge? What, indeed, is the self? How is knowledge of one's self related to knowledge of other people? Does self-knowledge contribute to one's self-development (indeed, of what does self-development consist)? Is there such a thing as one's "genuine" self? If there is, is this something to be discovered or created? These and cognate questions will be addressed in this course.

MAJOR READINGS

From classical to contemporary works in philosophy and psychology.

Some shorter papers; mid-term; take-home final

No previous acquaintance with philosophy is presupposed, but the material is abstract and difficult.
