A small group of Karnatak compositions will be examined in all aspects concerning Tala (Indian rhythm). These aspects include the setting of song-text, modes of performance, and improvisational treatment, including percussion accompaniment. Notated and recorded material will be supplemented with performances. Students will develop skills in identifying and graphically representing rhythmic structure. An appropriate research project will be designed for each student.
