Beginning Harmony and Tonal Counterpoint
MUSC 201 FA

This course is designed to give a thorough grounding in the basic compositional techniques of tonal harmony, part-writing (counterpoint), and formal structures of the "common practice" era in Western art music. LECTURES will introduce concepts on a theoretical level and provide guidance of ways in which they can be meaningfully applied to actual music. EAR-TRAINING SECTIONS, led by a TA, will focus on the development of aural and keyboard skills. Students are required to attend all lectures as well as two ear-training sections every week. They will participate in a lab meeting either on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9:30-10:20 AM, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-10:20 AM.

Periodic tests, weekly exercises, midterm, and final.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Ability to read music (in all clefs) is essential. Students will be expected to know the major and minor scales and the signatures (circle of fifths); all major and minor intervals and triads. They should have some familiarity with part-writing rules and musical form.
