Music and Theater of Indonesia

This introduction to the rich performing arts and culture of Indonesia focuses on the genres of Java and Bali. The approach will be descriptive and comparative, integrating music and theater. A principal theme will be the differing experiences of decolonization and modernization in two neighboring and related traditional cultures. We will also spend a portion of the course for demonstrations and workshops, including instruction on KECHAK (a Balinese musical drama, employing complex rhythmic play, chanting, and a story telling).
