Elementary Theory and Practice II
MUSC 104 SP

Following on from Music 103, Music 104 will continue to instruct students in the basic vocabulary of music-theoretic discourse. Topics such as notation, meter, phrase structure, chord function, analysis of form, and the technical foundations of musical aesthetics will be covered. Students will acquire the basic compositional techniques of tonal harmony and counterpoint. Aural skills (elementary ear training through sight singing, rhythm reading, aural identification, dictation, and related activities) and keyboard skills (the performance of scales, intervals, and triads) will be developed in weekly ear-training sections.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

There will be weekly homework assignments, quizzes, a midterm and final examination.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students are required to attend one hour-long ear-training session per week. These will be scheduled between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Prerequisites: MUSC 103 or consent of instructor.
