Worlds of Music
MUSC 101 SP

This course may be repeated for credit.

This course is an introduction to the diversity of ways the world's peoples make and study music. Each semester the course offers a concentrated introduction to three of the musical traditions in the world music program, while at the same time exposing students to cultural, historical, and music theoretical approaches to the study of performance, compostition, improvisation, and other practices. Two weekly one and a half hour lectures plus one weekly hour laboratory/discussion group.

The students are divided into three groups. Each group rotates through the cycle of three traditions led, respectively, by the three instructors. Each instructor designs his or her own readings, assignments and methods of evaluation. Candidates for entry to the music major must take MUSC101 twice during their first and second years.
