Topology
MATH 242 SP
Topology is the study of space, in a very general sense. We will discuss metric spaces, connectedness, and compactness. We will also study the fundamental group and the classification of two-dimensional surfaces, if
time permits.
MAJOR READINGS
The textbook - SET THEORY AND METRIC SPACES by I. Kaplansky. Allyn & Bacon-most recent edition.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
One hour exam, one three-hour final examination, about 5 substantial homework assignments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Criteria for admission to course: Successful completion of MATH222 or the equivalent is desirable, though not mandatory if other credentials are in order.
