Advanced Speaking, Writing, and Reading in Italian
ITAL 221 FA
This course is designed for students who have completed at least two years of college level Italian or who have achieved equivalent competency through study in Italy. Our primary objective is to enhance reading,
writing,
speaking skills through exposure to a variety of literary genres and artistic styles, from the Medieval sonetta to the Renaissance ottava, from opera to contemporary cinema, from the traditional novella to the modern
novel
(romanzo). We will include different kinds of languages and jargons, such as movie scripts, newspapers, ads, bureaucratic forms, internet sites etc., attempting to imitate them in short exercises or long essays.
MAJOR READINGS
G. Tomasi di Lampedusa, IL GATTOPARDO (Feltrinelli: 2000, 75th edition)
M. Tullio Giordana, C. Fava, M. Zapelli, I CENTO PASSI (Feltrinelli: 2001).
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
1. Weekly essays (at least 2 pages), to be handed on Mondays. The essay will be graded for both grammar and content or complexity.
2. Weekly screenings on Mondays at 7:00
3. Weekly esercitazioni with the Foreign
Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA)
at a time to be determined during the first week of class.
4. The Italian conversation hour is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended, especially for students who will spend their Spring Semester in
Bologna.
5. The final presentation (25
minutes) will focus on a free topic to be chosen with the instructor's advice.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Only placement results from the current academic year acceptable. Intended for students who have completed ITAL112 AND/OR those students returning from abroad who can demonstrate - normally through the placement exam -
an equivalent level of competence
in Italian. Other students may be admitted at the discretion of the professor.
Students will meet with the Course Assistant/Foreign Lang. TA once weekly for 50 minutes. This schedule will be devised the first
week of class.
Students will be
expected to participate actively in class; quality participation will count for 30% of the final grade. They will also be expected to attend various extra sessions (screenings, esercitazioni, conversation hours) that
are designed to maximize their
exposure to spoken Italian.
