Problems and Methods in Queer Historiography

This course is intended to prepare students for advanced research in the field of queer history and the history of gender, and to support a historical perspective for those doing queer research in American Studies. It will explore the origins of queer history in the fields of lesbian and gay studies, gender and sexuality studies; and its transformation by post-structural, cultural and critical race theory. We will also study contemporary histories which employ a queer perspective to critique power as it is articulated in political institutions, nation-building, and structures of knowledge. The course will encourage students to take a transnational and/or comparative perspectives that will teach comparative method more generally, as well as usefully situating the production of identities in particular historical, cultural and political contexts.
