Islam and Revolution

Islam has played an active role in Middle Eastern history, not only as a system of religious beliefs, but as an ideology espousing political action as well. This course will examine the various ways in which Islam has
functioned
in revolutionary situations in the 20th century as well as its relationship to various social revolutions. In particular, we will examine the radicalization of Islam as a political movement and the emergence of a
political
Islam with the Iranian Revolution and the emergence of groups such as Islamic Jihad, Hamas, and the Taliban.
