This interdisciplinary course will introduce students to current research topics in the study of science and medicine, and their social relations in the historical development of modern United States. The course will begin with an introduction to recent theoretical approaches to the study of science and medicine in society, including the new focus on issues of gender and race. It then will proceed through a series of case studies to examine the historical development of scientific and medical theories and practices in America, as well as the foundational assumptions shaping historical investigations of science and medicine.
