Academic Year 2003/2004
African History before 1870
HIST 217 FA
Precolonial African history was characterized by a great deal of adaptation, exchange, and mobility. This course examines these changes across the continent including ancient Egypt, the West African sahel, the Swahili
coast,
and southern Africa. At the same time, we pay attention to the way source materials shape our understanding of early trade with Europe, state-building, the slave trade, and the spread of Islam and Christianity. This
course
shows the dynamism of African communities and Africans' multifaceted engagement with neighbors and the world.
