This introductory lecture course is the first of three that cover the history of Europe from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period (see HIST202 and HIST203). This course is a history of European politics, culture, and institutions from roughly 1000 through 1500. Topics include: kings and knights; feudalism and chivalry; saints and popular religion; heresy and persecution; Jewish culture; Vikings; art and architecture; paganism and witchcraft; empire; Arab civilization; love, sex and marriage; the effects of the Black Death; and the development of mysticism and heresy.
