This course will examine the historical development of conflict in two of the world's trouble spots. Peoples on opposing sides in both conflicts rely on their own remembered version of history to justify their political positions. In this course, we will explore how history is remembered and produced by peoples who have not always been treated kindly by history. We will examine the fundamental question of whether or not history as text can ever be totally true or objective. We will also attempt to understand how artists under stress define themselves within the context of the "Troubles." The course will include discussion of selected Irish, Israeli, and Palestinan feature films.
