Why are some countries wealthy and equitable and others poor and unequal? Why have some poorer countries developed in a much more rapid, sustained and equitable manner than others in recent decades? These are some of the central questions we will address in this course. We will examine broad theoretical perspectives on development and compare the post-World War II experiences of two developing regions, Latin America and East Asia. In addition, we will examine the causes and consequences of the contemporary trend toward neoliberal economic reform in developing countries, and its relationship to the concept and reality of globalization.
