The Literature of Autobiography
ENGL 223 SP
This course will focus on non-fictional, fictional, and poetic constructions of self and the complex ways in which these constructions intersect. We will discuss various ways in which identity can be created, reflected,
and masked, paying close attention to the language of confession, conversion, and self-portraiture.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings will include works by Augustine, Douglass, Sebald, Beckett, Hejinian, Lu, Cha, and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A midterm essay of 5-7 pages, a final essay of 8-10 pages, several 1-page responses and an oral presentation.
