Techniques of Fiction
ENGL 206 FA

An introduction to the elements of fiction and a range of contemporary styles, for people who want to write or simply to increase their understanding and appreciation of short stories.

MAJOR READINGS

Stories by some of the masters--Chekhov, Hemingway, de Maupassant, Poe--and by many American contemporaries, including Denis Johnson, Amy Bloom, Tobias Wolff, Jhumpa Lahiri, Junot Diaz, Robert Stone, and Ann Beattie.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short exercises in various elements of fiction and two short stories. Attendance at every class required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

May not be taken in addition to another introductory fiction-writing course. May not be taken in the same semester as another writing course.
