Introduction to Critical Theory
ENGL 198 FA
This course offers an introduction to thinkers and works that have led to major changes in critical and cultural theory. Readings are short, but the extracts from philosophical and linguistic texts are quite demanding.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings selected from nineteenth and twentieth century theoreticians such as Marx, Freud, Saussure, Foucault, Althusser, and Jameson.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Frequent short papers and a longer final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
A willingness to read and reread relatively short but conceptually difficult texts.
