Advanced Poetry Workshop
ENGL 165 FA

This seminar-style course will focus on the reading and constructive discussion of poetry submitted by members of the workshop. It will also include an ongoing discussion of contemporary poetics. In order to establish a range of common texts, students are asked to explore an extended list of contemporary poetry and to select four texts for oral and written response. A finished collection of 10-15 pages of poetry is due at the end of the semester.

MAJOR READINGS

Recent works by contemporary American poets.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four brief prose response papers; weekly poetry submissions; constructive oral critiques; and a 10-15 page collection of poetry.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Please submit 5-7 pages of poetry and a biographical information sheet including your name, email address, year in school, major, a list of favorite writers and other influences, and a brief account of your history and interest in poetry. Submissions (no email or fax will be accepted) will be due to Sheila Kelleher, Wesleyan University, Department of English, 285 Court Street, Middletown, CT. 06459-0100 by noon on Wednesday, August 27. Results will be posted on the department bulletin board on Tuesda y, September 2. This is a drop/add course.
